South Australia’s Good Sports Win Major Community Health Award

Local sporting club in Adelaide’s north, Golden Grove Football Club, has won the prestigious Good Sports Award for South Australian Good Sports Club of the Year, recognising their exceptional progress in developing policies to promote a safer, healthier sporting environment.

Senator for Australia, the Hon David Fawcett, said the award was welcome recognition for Golden Grove Football Club’s efforts to make the club a healthy and welcoming place for people in the local area.

“Local sporting clubs are the backbone of South Australia and we can all be role models for our families and community to promote healthy behaviour,” Senator Fawcett said.

“Reducing drug and alcohol misuse, as well as anti-social behaviour, makes clubs more welcoming places for children and families who want to participate in sport.

“I congratulate Golden Grove Football Club for being leaders in South Australia and I encourage all sporting clubs to strive towards being Good Sports and to make their club as family-friendly as possible.”

The Australian Government has supported Good Sports for nearly 20 years and has committed more than $33 million to Good Sports from 2014-15 to 2019-20.

The Minister for Health, Greg Hunt, congratulated Golden Grove Football Club, and said local sporting clubs “contributed significantly to a healthier Australia.”

“They teach us sportsmanship, mateship, and to adopt healthy habits,” Minister Hunt said.

“I congratulate Golden Grove Football Club and wish it well, as it continues to promote physical activity and a healthy lifestyle in their local community.”

Federal Minister for Youth and Sport, Senator the Hon Richard Colbeck, praised this year’s award winners and finalists, calling them community champions.

“All of the Good Sports Awards finalists should feel incredibly proud of their efforts in building strong, welcoming and healthy environments,” Minister Colbeck said.

“Through the Good Sport Awards, sporting clubs right across the country are leading the way in demonstrating healthy behaviours for the whole community.”
