Media ReleaseAlbanese Government abandons key allies at UN
Once again, the Albanese Labor Government has put Australia at odds with our closest ally, the United States, and abandoned a key democratic ally in Israel.
Overnight, Labor has changed longstanding Australians positions at the United Nations in votes that will not protect a single civilian in the Middle East, prevent further terrorist attacks or release a single hostage still held by Hamas.
These changed positions will only please terrorists and autocratic states who initiated the barbaric attacks of 7 October 2023. They send completely the wrong signals.
Despite promising before the last election that there was no difference between the major parties on issues related to Israel, the Albanese Government keeps creating new points of difference.
It’s simply broken promise after broken promise as the Albanese Government has dropped or changed numerous Australian positions.
Labor began changing Australia’s longstanding positions in June 2022 when they failed to maintain previous Australian opposition to the UN’s disproportionate focus on Israel, by not supporting a US-led statement in the UN Human Rights Commission.
Since then, the Albanese Government has increasingly joined in on that disproportionate focus, changing previous Australian positions and voting against a key partner like the US.
Whether it be supporting a one-sided ceasefire that failed to hold Hamas to account, endorsing ‘the state of Palestine’s’ membership of the UN, changing years of previously consistent positions, Labor has completely undermined their own pre-election promises and Australia’s reputation for consistency.
Unlike Labor the Coalition will continue to stand by our democratic friend and partner Israel, their right to self-defence, and against terrorists who no country could tolerate living alongside.
Ends.
